From fleece to fabric
If I am preparing wool myself I wash and dry the fleece, then card the wool to align the fibres. I spin it on my wheel and dye it with natural plant dyes, many of them grown in and gathered from my garden. (Or leave it undyed to enjoy the natural colour variation of the wool). Once spun it can be woven as 'singles' or two or more threads are plied together to create a thicker yarn. As you might imagine this is a very lengthy process but the resulting cloth is absolutely unique in character.
Weaving with other yarns
More often I weave with yarn that is already prepared as this offers a huge variety of yarn blends and colours that I would not be able to achieve at home. I use only natural fibres, mainly wool and silk but also cotton, bamboo and others such as alpaca, camel and nettle.
